Sikkim Government College (SGC), Sikkim was established in 1995. It is an affiliated college.

Sikkim Government College, Namchi  (SGC, Namchi), accredited by NAAC with grade “B”, is a co-ed educational institution established on 18^th August, 1995. It is presently located at Kamrang, about 4 kms away from Namchi (South district headquarter). The institution was inaugurated by erstwhile Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Pawan Kr. Chamling. During its inception, the institution was stationed in a rented building at Namchi Bazar. The institution was established with an aim to provide easy access to higher education to the students of Sikkim. The motto of Sikkim Government College, Namchi “Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye” is a Sanskrit axiom meaning “to free people of all kinds of bondage – social, religious, political, of convention and superstitions, of caste and communalism through education.”

The college is leading a important role to promote value based education especially to the financially backward students. All academic activities are carried out in accordance with the prescribed syllabi, examination schedules and academic calendar of the Sikkim University.

The college has state-of-the-art technologies and infrastructure. The college comes under the Sikkim University, established under Sikkim University Act, 2006. In July 2007, the University started functioning.

 The SGC, Namchi emblem comprising of a lamp with flames at the center, lotus petals on either side of the lamp, set at the background of the mountains with blue sky above and ocean below embraces the significance of our ideals and determination to achieve greater heights of wisdom. The blue ocean signifies the unfathomable reservoir of knowledge and the blue sky points to our perseverance to achieve higher goals in life.  The burning lamp emerging from a lotus implies that the light from the lamp will lead people from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge, from the realm of unknown to the known.

The lotus signifies the seat of the Hindu goddess of speech, wisdom and learning, Saraswati.

The institution is affiliated to Sikkim University, a central university established by an Act of Parliament, 2007. At present, 19 Undergraduate courses in the field of Science, Commerce and humanities including professional courses like Journalism and Mass communication and 3 Post-graduate courses in the subjects Commerce, Education and Geography are offered by the institution. The post-graduate courses in the three subjects commenced from August, 2020. Approximately, 3000 students are enrolled in the undergraduate courses and about 120 students (20 students in each semester) are enrolled in the postgraduate courses.  The faculty strength of the college is just over 150 supported by 60 administrative staff.

The college has a beautifully conceptualized 3-storeyed building comprising of spacious classrooms, library, laboratories, offices and a multi-purpose auditorium. The hostels for both the girls and the boys with an intake capacity of 180 students have been constructed and is expected to function from August, 2022. The staff quarters for the faculties and non-teaching staff have been functioning since April, 2022. A sports complex is also being developed in the campus. A new science building is under construction and is expected to function from August, 2022.

Besides the infrastructural development, the college has an active NCC (National Cadet Corps) and NSS (National Service Scheme) units. The students of the college are actively involved in these units and other activities as well including sports and academics. The faculties are also actively involved in research, new teaching-learning methods etc. Literary papers from Department of Limboo and monthly “NGC Paperview” by Department of JMC are published.

SGC, Namchi, since its inception has been relentlessly endeavouring towards the holistic development of the students by incorporating friendly and flexible teaching-learning methods. Every member of the institution with their effort and persistence have been working with one objective only ie., to create an institution with broader sense of academic, cultural and moral connection and to nurture and harness the potentials of our students.
