Shree G.H. Shanghvi Shikshan Mahavidhyalaya, Bhavnagar was established in in June 1964 and began this college in the name of Madhayamik Shikshan Mahavidyalaya with intake of 55 student teachers. It began with the first principal namely Shree Harshadbhai Pandit.
The next principal Dr. Vanikar Saheb tried to mold up the college. The principal Dr. Rajanibhai Shah made genuine efforts to make the college one of the leading academic institutes of the Gujarat.
Due to the long and dedicated services, this institute is the only Grants-in-Aid college affiliated to M.K. Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar (Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar.
The college is recognized and running the B.Ed. course as per National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bhopal norms with 100 student teachers. The college has the status of the CTE. It is accredited National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade - (CGPA Score 2.20 on a 4 Point Scale) in the year 2008-09.
The college also has a Contact Centre of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, Ahmedabad for distance in education courses in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.).
The institute offers one year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) course for those who have completed their graduation from a recognized university with the minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.
Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the Degree level. But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled with a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.
