St. Edmund's College, Laitumkhrah (Dist. Shillong) was established in 1916 and managed by Presentation Brothers and Christian Brothers which was called the Edmund Rice Network and founded by the Edmund Ignatius Rice.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.
 
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.10 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 31st December 2009.

The aim of the college is to provide quality education for all sections of society reaching out especially to the socially, economically, culturally and educationally disadvantaged.

The society has open the schools/ and colleges in worldwide and works include State University, Engineering Colleges, Professional Degree Colleges, Academic Schools, Technical Centres, Pastoral Institutions, Reach out institutes, etc.

The historically the college was ready to start Inter-Arts and Inter-Science classes, in 1923 and affiliated with Calcutta University, Kolkata for these courses was received in 1923.

The first classes of the University section of St. Edmund’s College opened in 1924. Bro. J E McCann was the first Principal of the College (he was also the Principal of the School at this time). Brother. I.O' Leary was the first Principal of the College (separate from the School).

From 1924 to 1936, St. Edmund's College was a junior college of Intermediate Arts and Science. In 2010, the Higher Secondary Section has been segregated into a separate section within the College.

Today, St. Edmund’s College has made commendable progress and has opened up different departments of various disciplines including Electronics, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bachelor of Social Work, Environmental Science and B.C.A.

It is a co-educational private institute, providing a regular course which is located in an urban and tribal part of a northeast region of Shillong played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the Admission Criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.

The college has awarded as the best college by the affiliating university and also a number of awards in publication, offering scholarship & also awarded by the different society.

The college has also a big centralized Institutional Bio-Tech hub and also announced as the best Institutional Bio-Tech hub in India.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce streams with various specializations also two years postgraduate courses in Science and Commerce with various specialization under North Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

Apart from this, the college also introduced Post Graduate courses with admission to the Master's Degree in Social Work in 2011.
