Savitri Women's College, Bhanjanagar was established in 1981. As Women's College, Bhanjangar and was re-named as Savitri Women's College, Bhanjanagar in 1982.

The opening of a Women's College in the town of Bhanjanagar was materialised on 2nd July, 1981 by the incessant endeavour of eminent personalities of Bhanjanagar. The first Government Body was formed with Shri Somanath Rath, then Speaker of Orissa Legislative Assembly as President, Late Shri Sachidananda Rath, then S.D.O. of Bhanjanagar as working President, Shri L.N. Das, Advocate as Secretary and Late Shri M.S. Pattnaik, an eminent Social worker as Treasurer. At the initial stage i.e. diring the session 1981-82, the college started functioning in the premises of Bhanja Sahitya Parishad with 38 studnets and Miss J.J. Patro, Retired Reader in Home Science as Principal.

The foundation stone of the college building (Present Premises) was laid down by his excellency C.M. Poonacha, then Governor of Orissa, on 19.09.81. In July 1984, the college was shifted to the new building having a good premises of 5 acres of land, surrounded by compound wall. The environment of the college is very congenial for higher study of girl students as it is situated in the heart of the town in an educational institution complex. Women's colleges, Bhanjangar was re-named Savitri Women's College, Bhanjangar in 1982. The college was accorded with provisiona Govt. concurrence and University Affiliation for Intermediate Arts stream from the session 1981 - 82.

Subsequently during 1988-89, it has got Govt. concurrence and Affiliation of CHSE, Orissa for opening of Science Stream at +2 stage. However, since 1986-87 the college obtained Govt, concurrence and University Affiliation for Three Year Degree Course in Arts since 1991-92 for three Honours subjects, i.e., History, Oriya and Political Science & Home Science Hons. from the academic session i.e. 2004-05.

The college is affiliated to CHSE, Orissa and imparts teaching in Science and Arts and is affiliated to Berhampur University, Orissa and imparts teaching in +3 Arts Stream.

The above objectives and goals are initiated through academic curricular activities like teaching, learning and evaluation, seminars, group discussions and extramural lectures. Socail and cultural activites are developed through extension activities like NSS, YRC & Self Defence training for girls. In order to disseminate technical skills in the minds of the students. Regular practical classes and innovative methods of  teaching are being conducted. Self-discipline is ensured through NCC, Indoor & Outdoor Sports & Games.
