A Christian Minority Institution, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology was established in 1987 as Sathyabama Engineering College by Dr. Jeppiaar under Jeppiaar Educational Trust. Later, on July 16, 2001, the college conferred the status of "Deemed University" due to their academic in education.

The University has been awarded as Category "A" University by Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India and it was re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.09 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on September 12, 2017.

The college is said to be as "Deemed University" and it was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 3 of under Act, 1956.

It was also recognized and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) New Delhi.

At present, the institute offers 27 programmes at UG level and 41 programmes at PG level in all disciplines. Here the institute has excellent infrastructure facilities including modern laboratories, library with multimedia facilities, internet, and other general amenities.
