Saraighat College, Kamrup was established on 21st July, 1981. It is one of the premier and only institution of Higher Education in the region of greater Changsari area.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "C+" Grade.

The collee is recognized by the University Grant Commission (UGC), New Delhi, on 24th October, 2008 accepted its registration under the section 2(f) Category and on 13th April, 2009 accepted the registration of this college under the section 12(B) Category.

The college was brought under the Deficit "Grants-in-Aid" system on 25th March, 1998 and the "Government Provincialized" status on 13th April, 2009.

During its more than three decades old journey, this institution has been striving untiringly to spread the ray of learning and education amongst the rural population that surrounds it.

In this relentless service to the people, Saraighat College has so far experienced various hazards and challenges and successfully overcome the same. From its very inception this institution has been working with a missionary zeal and laid great stress to educate students of socio economically marginalized condition and took special care to enroll girls in it. With 116 students and a small contingent of 8 teachers along with 2 non teaching staff this institution came into operation on 21st July, 1981.

Initially, it was only an institution of intermediary Arts Courses. With the advancement of time, due to laborious philanthropic activities of the founding teaching and non-teaching staff and the enthusiastic cooperation of some local personalities, this institution became a full fledge Arts College.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts stream under Gauhati University, Guwahati.

It also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course.
