Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati was established in 1961.
Vidyapeetha was declared as a Deemed-to-be University on the recommendations of the U.G.C under Section 3 of UGC Act by the Government of India and accredited by NAAC with 'A' Grade.
Vidyapeetha was established at Tirupati (A.P.) by the Govt. of India on the recommendations of the Sanskrit Commission (1957) as an autonomous body under the name of Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha Tirupati Society. Dr. S.Radhakrishnan, the then Vice President of India laid the foundation stone of the vidyapeetha on 4th January 1962.
The basic objective of setting up the Vidyapeetha is to impart and improve Sanskrit knowledge, to accelerate the pace of higher Sanskrit learning and to combine the traditional Sanskrit education with modern scientific research.
Later, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan took control of Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education in April 1971. In the year 1987, Government of India declared the Vidyapeetha a Deemed University due to its service to the cause of Sanskrit Education, achievements in research and pubications and general progress in the last two and a half decades.
It was formally inaugurated by the then President of India, Sri. R.Venkataraman on 26th August, 1989. considering its achievements and potential for reseach in Traditional Sastras, the Univesity was given the status of Center of Excellence in Traditional Sastras during the X plan period.
Motto of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha:
- Vidyapeetha has derived its motto from Brihadaranyakopanishad which is engraved on its emblem - 'Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya' (lead me unto light from darkness). It explicitly focuses on the central purport of education and also speaks of the vision and the idealism for which the Vidyapeetha was established
Objectives of the Vidyapeetha:
- To preserve and impart instruction in traditional Sanskrit lore with special attention to highly specialised branches of Sastras
- To undertake interpretation of Sastras
- To establish their relevance to the problems in the modern era
- To provide means of intensive training in modern as well as Shastraic lore for teachers and to conduct research in Pedagogical aspects of Sanskrit education
- To publish literature and develop print and non-print materials in and about Sanskrit including original texts, commentaries and translations
