Ranchi Women's College, Ranchi is a government aided college and was established in 1949 by Late Bhanumati Prasad.

It is one of the premier institutions to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

The college is affiliated to Ranchi University, Ranchi and therefore it is a constituent part of this university and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

The college is recognized & approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bhubaneswar to B.Ed. course. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B+" Grade with CGPA Score 78.75 on 3rd May 2004.

The college has carved out a niche for itself in the world of higher education for women in social sciences/humanities, sciences, and commerce.

Initially, Ranchi Women's College was affiliated to the Patna University, Patna in 1951. In 1957 the affiliation was shifted to the Bihar University, Patna which was carved out of Patna University as an independent unit. Finally, when Ranchi University, Ranchi emerged as an independent University in 1960, Ranchi Women's College was affiliated to it.

In 1987, it was transferred to the category of “College Teaching up to Post Graduate Degree” by  UGC through letter no. F 8-105/86 (CPP-1) dated 3rd  Nov. 1987 under section 2(f) UGC Act 1956.

This college offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in addition to the intermediate (last two years of the School). It has a strength of about 10000 in all three streams right from plus two to postgraduate courses including 6 Vocational Courses and one B.Ed. course.

The proportion of the scheduled tribe/caste students is nearly 23%. If we exclude the students of the intermediate program then the enrolment is about 7000 students, of which 465 (9.2%) are enrolled in the post-graduate programs and 5067 (90.8 percent) are enrolled in the undergraduate programs.

The proportion of students from the reserved categories is the higher (23.5 percent) in the undergraduate programs and the lower in the graduate (13.5%) programs.

The college has attempted to keep itself updated in knowledge and skills by combining the traditional subjects in arts and sciences with vocational subjects in the emerging areas such as biotechnology, information technology etc.

Since the traditional programs in arts, science, and commerce have more of knowledge content and less of skill content, it is enriched through classroom discussions, seminars, tutorials, project work, networking with NGOs and lectures/workshops by experts from India and abroad.

Apart from these, the college offers two years Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course for those who have completed their graduation with minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.

Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the Degree level.

But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled with a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.
