Ramkrishna (R.K.) Nagar College, Karimganj was established in 1964.

The college is affiliated to Assam University, Silchar in 1994 and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade in 2004.

Ramkrishna Nagar College comes under Government Provincialisation in 2005 as per the Assam College Employees Act, 2005 after having been placed under Deficit Grants-in-Aid in 1974.

It is located in the lap of nature, which is one of the premier colleges in Barak Valley (Assam). It is in a sub-urban area surrounded by rural areas covering the remotest villages of East Karimganj District. Ramkrishna Nagar is a small council situated around 60 Kms. away from the district headquarter Karimganj (Assam, India).

The topography of the area comprises of villages and hills. The small cliffs of the hills add beauty to the place. The township is not thickly populated and the major part of the population over here belongs to Bengali Community. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people here and around.

Ramkrishna Nagar College, the only place of Higher Education in the neighbouring area came into existence on 12th January, 1964. Students of around 20 Kms. away from this place study here seeking their bright future. Since last fifty years, it has remained the hub of higher education.

This college took its shape as a result of the tireless and sincere efforts of a steering committee headed by Late B. N. Mukherjee, former Minister of Health, Govt. of Assam, supplemented by the cordial help and cooperation of an elite group of the locality.

This seat of learning came into the existence due to the sincere efforts of the public. It is to be mentioned here with reverence that founder Principal of the college Late Sishir Ranjan Kar Shastri, Late Girban Chandra Kar, Late Khogendra Chandra Dutta, Late Bihari Paul, Late Shyamacharan Das are the people pioneering in this respect.

The college, which organized with a single building made out of the contribution of common people, is now standing with glory as a renowned college with all modern facilities.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts & Science stream under Assam University, Silchar. It also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University for PG courses. Besides this, the college is running a Study Centre of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOPU), Guwahati.
