Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College was established in 1946. Its affiliated to University of Madras.
The sight of hundreds of deserving young candidates denied education due to a limited number of good colleges caused a desire in the minds of some public-spirited people to open a first-grade college in the city, and that the college is called RAMAKRISHNA MISSION VIVEKANANDA COLLEGE, after the great patriot-monk and founder of the Ramakrishna Mission.
On an auspicious day of 21st June 1946, Swami Kailashanandaji Maharaj, the then President of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai ceremoniously inaugurated the College. On 1st July 1946, the Professor, Philosopher, and President of India-to-be, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan formally inaugurated the College and dedicated it to the cause of quality education.
So, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College began its humble march with 20 teachers and 339 students with the prime motive of imparting man-making and character-building education and combining the principles of secular knowledge and spiritual knowledge.
The college has a reputation for maintain exemplary discipline in the campus and for achieving consistently high standards of academic performance. It offers five under-graduate courses in Humanities and Languages, five in Physical and Natural Sciences and one in Commerce with two sections.
It is offering courses of study in various disciplines under the autonomous scheme leading to B.A., B.Sc, B.Com, M.A., M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. In 2003, the institution was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, New Delhi.
The college was granted autonomous status to all undergraduate and postgraduate courses up to M.Phil, by the University Grants Commission, in 2004-2005. With the conferment of autonomy, the college is striving its best to impart holistic education rather than mere academic knowledge and skills.
The campus of the college spread over 14 acres of land with vast buildings having a built up area of more than 18000 sqmts.
The campus is around 5 km from the Chennai central railway station and 4 km from the Chennai Egmore railway station.

Swami Vivekananda defined education as the ‘manifestation of perfection already in man‘. Our Vision is to actualize Swami Vivekananda’s fundamental educational ideals of imparting life-building, man-making, and character-building education. We strive to develop an educational system wherein the rich and spiritual heritage of our country with its hoary tradition of values like sacredness of knowledge, shraddha,purity, devotion of truth, etc., are taught on the one hand; and on the other, are taught the western values of scientific temper, rational investigation into the truth of the world we live in, objectivity of approach through science and technology, work efficiency, team work, etc.
