Pragjyotish Collegem, Kamrup was established on 1st September, 1954. Eminent scholar and litterateur Pandit Tirthanath Sarma was its founder principal.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956. It is accredited twice by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B+" Grade in 2003 & 2010 respectively.

From its modest inception as an Arts college, Pragjyotish College has now developed into its present stature of a famous full-fledged Degree College, imparting higher education in Arts, Science and Commerce streams.

The college has done excellent pioneering work in different branches of education. It has generated talents for pursuit of truth, creation, and dissemination of knowledge, and has drawn students from all over the North-east and neighbouring states.

The college has inspired innumerable and countless teachers, students and educationists, who have left an indelible mark in the educational scenario of this region.

Pragjyotish College is proud to be the ‘grooming ground’ for several eminent personalities in the field of politics, academics, medicine, engineering, beauracracy, judiciary, etc. The college has celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2004 with a long and continuous programme, spanning for five years.The college has developed its own unique philosophy and vision, mission and programmes of action.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce stream & Post graduate course in Assamese & Education under Gauhati University, Guwahati. It also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course.

Rules and Regulations at Pragjyotish Collegem, Kamrup:

• Attendance in classes is strictly compulsory. A student must not attend less than 75% of the lectures delivered in each subject to become eligible for appearing in the Council/ University Examination.

  A student not fulfilling the above requirement will not be allowed to appear in the final examination

• College Uniform is compulsory for all students for all purposes inside the college campus
• The students must observe complete silence on the college premises. They must not loiter aimlessly within the college campus
• Students must spend their spare time / off periods in such a way that will not cause any interference with the work of others
• Bike-holders must obtain gate passes from the Principal
• Cell phones are strictly prohibited in the College campus. Students found using cell phones are liable to face disciplinary action including the seizure of the cell phones by the Discipline Maintenance Committee members
• It is mandatory for every student to carry the identity card with him / her so that it can be produced whenever necessary
• Students should attend at least two unit tests / sessional examinations, held for each subject of each class in all the streams during the academic calendar
