Nowgong College, Nagaon was established on 7th August, 1944. It is one of the pioneer colleges of Assam established with the permission from the University of Calcutta.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade.

Nowgong College is situated at the heart of Nagaon city. The college is almost 120 Km away from Guwahati, the capital of Assam that is well connected by air, road and rail with the rest of the country.

It imparts Under graduate and Post Graduate level of education with about 90 faculty members, and offers major courses in all subjects in Arts, Commerce and Science stream.

It was established by founders like Jananeta Moti Ram Bora, Principal Sahityacharyya Jajneswar Sharma, some distinguished personalities, administrators, teachers and students, the college has produced many extra-ordinary talents and made a distinguished position in the academic, social and intellectual realm of the state.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce stream under Gauhati University, Guwahati. It also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course. Besides this, Post Graduate, Degree, Diploma and Certificate Courses under convergence scheme Indira Gandhi National Open University, Delhi.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University for PG courses. Besides this, the college is running a Study Centre of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOPU), Guwahati.
