Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia Government College Kapurthala was popularly known as N.J.S.A Government College Kapurthala, established in 1856 by Maharaja Randhir Singh in Kapurthala. Later it is named after Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia the founder of Kapurthala State.
It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
The college is affiliated with Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar formerly affiliated with Calcutta University, Kolkata in 1877 and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) in 1969 under Act, 1956.
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B++" Grade (CGPA Score 2.76 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 16th September 2016.
The aim of the college was to providing education to economically weaker sections of society and providing quality education to the students to enable them to find employment and to develop their personality to become good citizens.
Earlier the college was known as Randhir College, Kapurthala is one such institution and rather only one in the whole of Punjab which has entered the 150th year of its establishment.
It was established as a Sanskrit Vidyalaya and named Randhir School in the year 1856 by the visionary ruler of Kapurthala, His Highness Raja Randhir Singh.
It happens to be the same year in which three universities in Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay were established under the new education policy based on the Woods Dispatches of 1854.
The students used to sit under a Peepal tree under which Havan Kund was erected and get the education in the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara.
In 1864 teaching up to the entrance standard was introduced and the European Mr. Hudesn was appointed as principal in 1871.
On assuming active control in 1890, H.H. Maharaja Jagatjit Singh started taking the keen interest in the education system of the state and raised it to intermediate college in 1896.
N.J.S.A. Government College was upgraded in 1896 as an intermediate college. Later in 1945, N.J.S.A. Government College was made a degree college.
To accommodate the rising number of students a new U-shaped building was constructed around old Peepal tree consisting of modern-day classrooms and verandas in the year 1912, commemorating the visit of H.H. the king-emperor of India and was inaugurated on 7th April 1913 by Sir Louis Dane, the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab.
Maharaja having a great love for French introduced the language in college in 1916 and this became the only institution teaching French in the region.
It was a co-educational government Institute, provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Kapurthala played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
The college also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of education, sports and curricular activities under Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Bachelor of Arts, Science, Commerce, Mangement, and Computer Science streams and offers two years of post-graduate courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce streams with various specializations under Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. It also offers Post Graduate Diploma and Add-On Course.
