The college completes 50 years of its glorious existence in 2017. The Church took a keen interest not only in meeting the spiritual needs of the people but also the educational needs.
The informal school which was started on the veranda of Milagres Church known as 'Bolkanv School', at a time when there were no organized schools around the area, became a formal institution in the year 1887 at the hands of Rev. Fr Albert D'souza.
It was recognized as St Joseph's Primary school in the year 1892. Rev. Fr C.P. Gonsalves S.J, with the spontaneous support and cooperation of the parishioners, succeeded in starting Milagres Secondary School in 1913, which was upgraded into a High School in the same year. But the absence of an Institution of higher education at Kallianpur deprived the economically backward families' opportunities for higher education.
It was the far sighted vision of 83-year-old Very Rev. Monsignor Denis Jerome D'souza which was instrumental in providing a college to the rural students of Kallianpur. "The children who work in the field should be able to come to the college straight from the fields" this was the vision of Msgr.
D.J. D’souza, the founder of the college.
This vision was realized in 1967 with the support of the parishioners of Milagres Church. Many students have reaped the fruits of collegiate education due to the existence of this college.
Late Dr. P. Gururaj Bhat, a great Historian, who has been the founder Principal of the college, gave a dynamic leadership to the college in the initial years. It is indeed a miracle that Kallianpur, a Panchayat area, having a college catering to the needs of the villagers around and bearing the fruit with such a rapidity.
The seed was sown by Msgr D.J. D'souza. on the soil prepared by the villagers of Kallianpura germinated and grown with vigor and health nurtured by the staff of the college and protected by the management.
The continued and enduring attention and the nourishment that the institution got has rendered it enough strength to sustain itself and to give to society the quality education.
Milagres College is a full-fledged First Grade College with two faculties of Arts and Commerce. This is what was expressed by Dr. P. Gururaj Bhat, the founder Principal of the college in his college day report in 1970.
But today it is a name in the University for providing quality education with additional courses such as Science introduced in the year 1981, B.B.M in the year 2007, BCA in the year 2008, M.S.W. in the year 2009 and M.Com in the year 2012.
At present, the college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, & Management streams with various optional specializations and offers two years postgraduate courses in MSW & M.Com stream under Mangalore University, Mangaluru.
