Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam was established in 1956. Its Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, The college is accredited by NAAC with A+ grade.

Mar Athanasium Colle (Autonomous), Kothamangalam is a premier institution of higher education in Kerala, Under Mar Athanasium College Association, shaped by a group of visionaries led by its first Associaton Secretary and Principal Prof. M.O. Varghese. Started in the year 1955, the college has a long tradition of imparting value based holistic education to many generations of students in Kerala.

At Present the college is offering 15 UG and 17 PG Programme in Biology. The college has 4 Research centres in Physics, Chemistry, English and Economics. It has total student strenth of 1888, faculty strength of 121 and 63 members in Non Teaching Staff. Out of the total 109 Regular teachers, 52 are Ph.D holders and 28 are M.Phil Holders.

The College has excellent infrastrucuture like well equipped laboratories, Smart Classes, Swimming Pool, Indoor Shooting Range, Sophisticated Instrumentation Center. The College has a multi - storied fully automated library with 70755 books, 6000 e-books and more than 100 periodicals. Two airconditioned Seminar halls, 10 Smart Class Rooms, Reprographic center, AC Nonresident Student Centre, Wi-Fi Connectivity, 14 Science labs, 6 Computer labs, one Language Lab and 5 Research Labs are other highighting factors of the institution. The college offers training programmes for A1 - Level Examination in German, coaching for IELTS, Entrepreneurial Development programmes and six Certificate Courses.

The College was accredited at A Grade by NAAC Continuously from 2002 and at A+ Grade with GPA 3.52 in 2017. The College was selected as one of the best Colleges in India and was awarded the title of 'College with Potential for Excellence' in 2009 and was extended upto 31 March 2019. The College produced a total of 44 Ph.Ds and published 117 research papers in peer reviewed national and international journals, during the last three years.

A patent was awarded to Mar Athanasius College, in 2019, and the inventor is Dr. Manju Kurian, Faculty of Chemistry.

The College is receiving grants from UGC, DST, RUSA, UBA, and DBT. Four Science Departments of the college were selected under "Star College" scheme of CBT. The College was honoured with Malayala Manorama "Pakathulli Award", Bhoomimithra Award, National Encironmental Awareness Award, Green Award etc. The College has sparkling achievements in sports and games as well. The College has produced 17 International Athletes including 2 Olympians. The College was selected as the best college in sport during 2013. The College won Rajiv Gandhi Ever rolling Gold Trophy for overall Champions in College Games (2017) by Kerala State Sports Council. The College has proven its mettle in sports events by winning the Best Sports Performance Trophy of Malayala Manorama for the Academic year 2019-20.

The College has always been under the divine light of Saint Eldo Mar Baselious and the blessings of His Holiness Paulose Mar Athanasius, the Patron Saint of the College.
