Pondicherry Dental College and Hospital was established in the year 1990.

Its affiliated to Pondicherry University. 

It was rechristened as Mahatma Gandhi Dental College and Hospital by the then Lt. Governor, Her Excellency late Dr. (Tmt.) Rajendra Kumari Bajpai in the year 1995.

It was renamed and upgraded to Mahatma Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences on 08.09.2005.Since its inception the degrees (BDS and MDS) are recognized by the Dental Council of India and this Institution is affiliated to the Pondicherry University (a Central University).

The Institution is an autonomous body fully funded and owned by the Government of Puducherry. The Institute is administered by a constituted Board of Governors headed by the Chief Secretary to the Government of Puducherry as its Chairman.

Within a short period, the Institution has attained the peak, with due recognition at National and International level. It has been declared as the best Dental Institution in the Country, in the Government Sector, by the then President, Dental Council of India in September 2000 and again by the present President, Dental Council of India in December 2004.
