Maharaja's College Ernakulam is an oldest Indian government college of higher education located in Kochi, established in 1875.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (3rd Cycle) on 23rd March 2012.

The aim of the college was of uplifting the educationally backward community of the area who had been denied the right to education for generations.

It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Ernakulam played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

This multidisciplinary centre of higher learning had its humble beginnings as a single room English school started by the Royal Kingdom of Cochin in 1845.

Maharaja's germinated as an elementary English school in 1845 and it was in 1875 that the institution became a regular college. From its inception to 1925, it was called The Ernakulam College and in 1925, on the completion of fifty fruitful years, it was rechristened Maharaja's College.

The school was upgraded to a college in 1875 and in June 1925 the college acquired its present name. The first PG course was started in 1947 in the Department of Chemistry, which already had research facilities holding to M.Sc and Ph.D.

The college provided instruction in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, History, and Economics; it was affiliated with Madras University.

Following the integration of Cochin and Travancore states, the college was transferred from Madras to Travancore University in 1949.

The government of Kerala recognized it as a Centre of Excellence in the state and the University Grants Commission awarded the college with Potential for Excellence (CPE). In 2014, UGC awarded Autonomous status to the college.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the admission criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.

The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

Sir C. V. Raman and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan were among the speakers at the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 1925.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. It also offers Ph.D. and Add-On course.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, and various other examinations are held in the college premises.
