Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das (L.O.K.D.) College, Sonitpur popularly known as LOKD College was established on 15th July, 1970. It is a premier institute of higher learning in Dhekiajuli, Dist. Sonitpur, Assam.

The college was established with the unwavering endeavour of some leading citizens and the public of greater Dhekiajuli. During its inception it was named as "Dhekiajuli College" but later on in the year 1975 it was renamed as "Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das College" after Late Omeo Kumad Das, an eminent social worker, leading Gandhian leader and the first Education Minister of Assam in Independent India.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B+" Grade in the year 2004.

With a small batch of 116 students in 1970 the college has traveled a long way and at present it imparts education to more than 3500 students with three faculties: Arts, Science and Commerce.

Having contributed significantly to the academic and cultural life of Dhekiajuli the college has not only withstood the test of time but has also carved a niche for itself in the sphere of higher education in Assam.

The college is situated at the gateway of Dhekiajuli by the roadside of NH 15 in its own plot of land which covers an area of about 16 acres. The serene and eco-friendly campus is enhanced by a verdant Botanical garden where the students can gain first-hand knowledge of different plants. A fishery located inside the college adds to the beauty of its picturesque ambiance.

The college has relentlessly tried to instill the spirit that one should strive towards attaining knowledge without being perturbed by any anxiety: mundane or spiritual and must be absorbed with one's goal in view.

Remaining indifferent to obstacles and hurdles that may come along the way, one must pursue knowledge with concentration and perseverance.

The college anthem composed by Sri Pramod Saikia, retired Library Assistant of this college also points to its philosophy of inclusiveness and peace which can be attained through knowledge in its right perspective. The college has remained true to this spirit and has provided an atmosphere where students from diverse ethnic and linguistic communities collectively pursue their goals to build a solid academic and cultural environment.

Originally the college offered education in Higher Secondary and Degree level only in Arts faculty. However in the later part of the eighties, the need for the Science faculty was strongly felt and in 1992 the college introduced the Science faculty with well-equipped laboratory facilities.

To meet the growing demand opened by the corporate enterprises, the college started the B.Com Three Years Degree Course from 2010-2011 session. The college mostly maintains the Commerce faculty by generating its own resources.

The college imparts education in Higher Secondary and Degree Courses of study in three faculties - Arts, Science & Commerce. The medium of instruction in the college is both in English and Assamese except the Language Subjects like Bodo, Bengali, Nepali, Hindi Elec. etc.

Motto:

The motto of the college "Tamasho Ma Jyotirgamai", (lead us from darkness to light) is its bedrock and the guiding force.

Rules & Regulation at Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das (L.O.K.D.) College, Sonitpur:

• Academic session starts at the college as per Gauhati University regulations. A copy of the Academic Calendar will be enclosed with the prospectus
• Attendance of the students are compulsory and the students who have less than 75% attendance will not be allowed to sit as a regular student either in the college or university examination
• Students irrespective of HS and Degree classes must have to appear in all the examinations conducted by the college during an academic session
• An examination committee formed by the authority will conduct all the examinations
• The schedule and duty of the tutorial and other college examinations will be given in due course of time
• Students must maintain discipline in the college, violation of the rules and regulations of the college will invite punitive actions like transfer certificate or expulsion from the college
• Any students found indulging in ragging or any other such activities will be expelled from the college
• College uniform is compulsory for all the students
• Students Union will function under the control and guidance of the college authorities
• All power of maintenance of discipline are vested with the Principal and his/her decision shall be final in all matters
• Only those Societies and Associations which have been recognized by the Principal shall have the facilities of using the college premises
• Bringing Identity Cards to college is compulsory for all students
• Fille up registration form should be submitted in the office within the stipulated time as fixed by the college office.

  No registration form will be recived after such time

• For pass certificate from the college one has to apply one day ahead and for a transfer certificate application must be made at least two days ahead
• The students must park their vehicles at the parking area and are prohibited from parking their vehicles at any other place
• Concession for the Wards of Kashmiri migrants for admission in HS and TDC classes will be provided as per Govt. rule
