Lanka Mahavidyalaya, Hojai was established on 20th July, 1979 in the northern outskrits of Lanka town which is situated in the southernmost part of the District Nagaon, Assam.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade in November, 2015.

Lanka is situated at a distance of about 180Kms. From Guwahati, the capital city of Assam and about 10Kms from Hojai, the district headquarter town. The site where the college stands today spreads over an area of about 17 acres amid green surroundings.

Lanka being a backward area,there was no institution of Higher Education within a distance of 20kms. Before the establishment of Lanka Mahavidyalaya and a vast majority of students could not afford Higher Education due to financial constraint. As the college community has been exerting its sincere and untiring efforts to enlighten the economically and educationally backward people of the area, the scenario has changed for the better to a great extent.

The college started its mission with only 130 students at Lanka High School premises. It was shifted in 1982 to its present site which spreads over  a sprawling area amid green surroundings. At present the college is having a total strength of about 1750 enrolments which reflects the progress of the institution day by day.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts & Commerce stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts & Commerce stream under Gauhati University, Guwahati. It also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University for PG courses. Besides this, the college is running a Study Centre of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOPU), Guwahati.
