Lakhimpur Post Graduate Training College (LPGTC), North Lakhimpur was established in 1976.
The college is affiliated to Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh and recognised by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) with an intake of 60 and college has been included under section 2(f) and 12B of University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956.
The institution has been imparting teacher training to pre-service and in-service teachers with an objective of enhancing quality education of the teacher of Lakhimpur in particular and Assam in general.
The need of establishment of teacher education institution was felt at North Lakhimpur because of ever increasing number of high and higher secondary schools in the nooks and corners of the District. It was a need of the hour. Earlier, teachers of various high schools were sent on deputation by the Govt. of Assam to study and acquire B.Ed. degree but due to dearth of seats only a few could avail this.
To mitigate the problem it was felt that the establishment of a Post Graduate Training College will effectively train and educate the teachers to be a competent teacher with value oriented education.
Since its inception, this institution has been serving as the Teacher Education Institution not only for the North Bank of Assam i.e. from the Morkokseleng to Darrang District but also to the other states like Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, etc.
At present this institution is in effort of eradicating this problem by producing competent teachers for schools. Moreover realizing the need of competent science teachers in secondary schools, General Science Method Subject was introduced in the year 2000 in the college. Till today 530 nos of Science teacher-students have obtained B. Ed. Degree with Science Method Subject.
The Govt. of Assam has deputed in-service teachers to this institution since 1991. Till date 1650 nos.
of teacher-students have qualified
B.Ed. degree from this institution.
A master plan has been prepared to fulfill the infra-structure facilities of norms and standards of
NCTE in allotted land of
Govt. of Assam in
Nakari Mouza, Nalkata, North Lakhimpur, Assam.
The institute offers
one year & two years Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course for those who have completed there
graduation with minimum aggregate of
50% from any
recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.
Students here are admitted who completed there
graduation from
recognized university with at least
50% marks in major or in aggregate at the
Degree level. But
Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled with a relaxation
5% marks in eligibility for admission.
Various teaching and learning techniques are being used by the faculty to impart knowledge and skills to students at

Indira Gandhi Open University, New Delhi has identified this institution as one of the
IGNOU Centre for conducting different programmes.
