Lady Keane College, Shillong was established in July 1935 and founded by Shri. Acharya Brojo Sundar Roy who was the first principal of the college.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.
 
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.09 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 24th September 2014.

The aim of the college is excellence with integrity is the driving force behind each endeavor of every single member past and present of this College, to impact the life of every young woman who wisely chooses to be matured and educated by it.

The history of college establishment was first the managing committee with Shri A. Das acquired a bungalow called Groveside.

The bungalow housed the college for two years and was the nucleus of all the activities related to the acquisition of a permanent site for Lady Keane College.
 
It was in the first meeting of the Managing Committee at the Groveside on the 23rd of May 1935 that a resolution was passed to open an Intermediate College for the next academic session commencing in July, 1935.

Subsequently, the college was affiliated with the Calcutta University, Kolkata in 1938. In 1948, it came under the jurisdiction of the Gauhati University, Gauhati and the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong in 1973.

It is a women's self-financed private institute, providing a regular course which is located in a rural and tribal part of a northeast region of  Shillong played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the Admission Criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.

The college has awarded as the best college by the affiliating university and also a number of awards in publication, offering scholarship & also awarded by the different society.

At present, the college offers two years intermediate courses in Arts & Science stream with various optional specializations under Meghalaya Board of School Education, West Garo Hills.

The college also offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts and Science streams with various specializations under North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. It also offers Self-financed, Diploma, and Add-On Certificate courses.

Also, Lady Keane College is the one of the biggest Institutional Biotech Hub, Shillong for offers research and it was inaugurated on 23rd June 2011.

• To impart collegiate education to women and to do everything necessary for the spread of liberal education among women irrespective of religion, caste, creed or nationality and to carry on, fulfill and attain all that is near and akin to the object and purpose, as aforesaid of running, conducting and maintaining the said institution

Objectives:

• The prime concern of the Institute is to develop patterns of teaching at the undergraduate level in all branches
• The other important objective of the Institute is to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of women in all the important branches of academic activities
• The educational principles adopted here are those which are best suited to the needs of the country and the state in particular
• Emphasis is laid on the active learning process and on the cultivation of scholarly habits and scientific methods
• The College strives to make the students aware of the different career opportunities available to them, which, if pursued, shall ensure them a better future.

  With this aim in view, emphasis has been laid an opening of Career Oriented Courses and coaching classes for Competitive Examinations

• In its pursuance of Excellence with Integrity, the College offers Career and Moral Counselling to its students, from experienced Counsellors
• To address the various gender-based issues that are prevalent in our society today, the College has set-up, the Women's Cell and the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Cell under the guidance and supervision of the Equal Opportunity Centre
• As a safety measure in the event of an occurrence of any natural disaster, the College has a Disaster Management Cell that trains & equip the students with basic survival skills and First Aid techniques
• The highest goal, however, of Lady Keane College is to Empower the young woman of today - academically, Physically and morally to meet the challenges of the 21st century
