K.J. Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies was established on 6th December 1993 and founded by the Dalai Lama which is managed by Somaiya Trust, which was established on 9th September 1959.
The Dalai Lama was the founder of Buddhism which has crossed all geographical boundaries of the land of its birth.
It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
The college is affiliated with the University of Mumbai, Mumbai and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

The K.J. Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies was set up in Somaiya Vidyavihar to encourage research and study of the various dimensions of Buddhism, from textual study and analyses to comparative religious and philosophical perspectives and historical studies.
It is co-educational private institute, providing a regular course which is located in an urban part of Mumbai played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
A rigorous curriculum for MA (Buddhist Studies) was developed by the faculty of the institute, in consultation with senior scholars from the country. With this course the college started offering as electives not just the major languages of Indian Buddhism – Pali and Sanskrit – but also elementary Tibetan, fulfilling a long felt need for a window into the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.
This college is the Centre which offers a Ph.D. program which has been received well not just in India but across Southeast Asia.
The college also offers M.A. Buddhist Studies, Various Diploma & Add-On Certificates courses for the students.
