Institute of Future Studies, University of Kerala, Karyavattom (Dist. Thiruvananthapuram) was established in 1990 and managed by Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Kerala.
It is one of the premier constituent unit of University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.
The institute is self-affiliated with University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.
It is recognized and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade.
The aim of the department is to undertake interdisciplinary research and teaching programme at the post-graduate level with an emphasis on the scientific study of future.
It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Thiruvananthapuram played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
Department of Futures Studies, University of Kerala offers M Tech programme technology Management from the years 2000 onwards.
Currently, the department offers M.Tech. in Technology Management, Post Graduate Diploma in Knowledge Management apart from M. Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in Future Studies.
The M.Tech. the program specializes in Technology Management by covering areas like Technology Forecasting and Assessment as well as Mathematical / Computer Modeling, Expert System etc. The programme has a credit semester framework, with 72 credits in four semesters.
The institute had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.
The institute offers two years of postgraduate course in Science and Management stream with various specializations under the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.
It also offers Diploma, Ph.D., and Add-On courses.
University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, and various other examinations are held in the institute premises.
The minimum qualification for M.Tech is a B.Tech degree in any branch with at least 55% marks. Preference will be given to candidates having valid GATE score. Admission is based on the GATE score of the candidates.

- A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the institute. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the institute campus

- The institute Unit NSS Wing performs different type of social services within and outside of the area
