About Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar
Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (also known as IIT Gandhinagar, and IITGN) was established in 2008. It is a public institute (autonomous) of higher education declared to be an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.
It is located in Palaj, Gandhinagar, Gujarat on the banks of river Sabarmati. Gandhinagar is in proximity to Ahmedabad which is one of the oldest living cities in India, known both for a rich cultural past as well as state-of-the-art infrastructure, thriving industries, and many modern amenities.
Brief History:
IIT Gandhinagar is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2008. The Institute began operating on a temporary campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda, mentored by Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. The first batch of students was admitted to Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
It is one of the parent institutions under Indian Institutes of Technology, therefore it is affiliated with Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. The institute is approved & recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.
IITGN was included in the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. The Act was passed in the Lok Sabha on 24th March 2011 and by the Rajya Sabha on 30th April 2012.
The institute took possession of over 400 acres of land in August 2012, and classes and other activities on the new campus began in July 2015. The institute functions as a fully residential campus and will be constructed in phases. The campus runs on solar power and is envisioned to be a pollution-free, green zone.
Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar strives to offer the best undergraduate and graduate education in India with unmatched innovations in the curriculum. The institute promotes critical thinking and an appreciation of the interdisciplinary character of knowledge, with an emphasis on the liberal arts, project-oriented learning, compulsory courses in design and the life sciences, diversity and globalization.
The five-week immersion Foundation Programme for all new undergraduate students was recognized with the World Education Award 2013 by the World Education Summit for innovations in engineering education. Nearly a quarter of its undergraduate students receive study abroad experience during their academic career. IIT, Gandhinagar is committed to promoting excellence in science, technology, as well as the humanities and social sciences and to the development of rounded and nuanced minds.
IIT, Gandhinagar offers B.Tech and M.Tech programmes in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Materials Science and Engineering and also offers M.Sc. programmes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Cognitive Science. It also offers MA programme in Society and Culture.
Ph.D. programmes are offered in all the engineering and science disciplines such as Chemical, Biomedical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science and Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Earth Science, and Cognitive Sciences. Apart from the graduate programmes in engineering and science, the Institute also offers Ph.D. in Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political sciences and Social Epidemiology.
About Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT):
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance etc.
The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three institutes located at Bhilai, Chennai, Delhi, Dhanbad, Dharwad, Goa, Guwahati, Jammu, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Palghat, Patna, Ropar, Tirupati, and Varanasi. Each IIT is an autonomous institution, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration.
The Union HRD Minister is the ex-officio Chairperson of IIT Council. The IITs had a common admission process for undergraduate admissions, called IIT-JEE, which was replaced by Joint Entrance Examination Advanced in 2013.
The post-graduate level program that awards M.Tech, MS degrees in engineering is administered by the older IITs (Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Dhanbad, Roorkee, Varanasi, Guwahati). M.Tech and MS Admissions are done on the basis of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
In addition to B.Tech, M.Tech and MS programs, IITs also award other graduate degrees such as M.Sc in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, MBA, Ph.D. etc. Admission to these programs of IITs is done through Common Admission Test (CAT), Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) and Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED).

- The Literary Club at IITGN currently incubates three distinct and exclusive verticals - Creative Writing, Debating and Public Speaking, and Quizzing. - A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the college. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the college campus
- The Institute provides the training facility like- face to face interview, resume making, communication skills, that help the students to face the campus recruitment
- For every course, the college imparts practical training to its students that helps them to understand better, improve their demonstrative skills, eliminate hesitation and in this process strives to mold them into industry ready professionals
- The college also provides NCC training to its students. The NCC cadets attend different camps and earn pride for themselves and for the college
- The college Unit NSS Wing performs different type of social services within and outside of the area
