Regarded as one of the top institutes in India, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, also known as IITD or IIT Delhi was established in August 1961. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is a centre of national importance that provides education in technology and research, both basic and applied.
IIT Delhi is an autonomous institute and a public engineering college that was established under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the Government of India.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is approved and recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and as an Institute of National Importance (INI) by the Government of India. It is also an ISO 9001:2008 certified institute.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi aims at focusing on the students so that they get exposure to current trends in their chosen discipline of study and acquire practical experience. The institute provides this by arranging various activities in the institute campus by partnering with other institutes and industries.
IIT Delhi is the fourth IIT to be established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. It was established with an aim to improve the level of technical education in India.
The control and administration of the institute are in the hands of a Board of Governors. The Chairman of the Council is the Minister of Human Resource and Development, Govt. of India.
IIT Delhi was established with the help of funds provided by the Soviet Union and support from UNESCO. UNESCO assisted the project by providing technical expertise and equipment mostly from the Soviet Union. On the other hand, the Government of India agreed to bear the expenses related to funding the project and other recurring expenses.
In the year 1945, Shi. N.R. Sarkar, who was then a member of the Viceroy's Executive Council introduced the concept of IITs in a report.
Based on his recommendations, in the year 1950, the first IIT was set up in Kharagpur, known as Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Shi. N.R. Sarkar had proposed in his report to start such institutes in various parts of the country.
Based on the recommendations of the Sarkar Committee, the then Government of India went ahead with the plan of establishing more such institutes in the country with the help of countries like USSR which helped to set up such an institute in Bombay, through UNESCO.
After this, the establishment of the other institutes followed. IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Delhi were established with the help of funds and technical assistance provided by West Germany, the US and the UK, respectively. In 1995, IIT Guwahati was established and in 2001, the University of Roorkee was converted to IIT Roorkee.
On January 28, 1959, H.R.H. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, laid the foundation stone of IIT Delhi at Hauz Khas, when he visited India.
On 17 August 1961, the institute was formally inaugurated by the then Minister of Scientific Research & Cultural Affairs, Prof. Humayun Kabir. During this time, the college was affiliated to the University of Delhi. The institute was later renamed as Indian Institute of Technology Delhi after it was granted the status of a university.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi offers courses across eleven disciplines in science, engineering, management, and humanities, providing research, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in these disciplines.
The institute awards the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) for undergraduate courses and the Master of Technology (M.Tech.) for postgraduate courses in several engineering fields. It also awards the Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Ph.D. in various fields.
Admission to the college is possible through IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced) which is conducted every year.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has awarded the college the status of "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)".
In 2017, the National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked IIT Delhi in the fourth place amongst all the engineering colleges in India.
At the international level, as per the 2018 QS World University Rankings, it was placed at no. 172.

Mission:
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) provide higher education in India. These are autonomous public institutes. These institutes are governed as per the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The Act has formally announced them as centres of national importance. The Act also specifies their framework for governance, powers, duties, etc.
The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists 23 institutes located at Ropar, Palghat, Dhanbad, Bhilai, Delhi, Dharwad, Jodhpur, Goa, Jammu, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Indore, Roorkee, Mandi, Patna, and Tirupati.
The IIT Council links each IIT to the other as these are autonomous institutions. The IIT Council oversees their administration.
The ex-officio Chairperson of the IIT Council is the Union HRD Minister. For undergraduate admissions, the IITs have a common admission process, the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced.
Before 2013, the common admission process was called IIT-JEE.
The older IITs (Madras, Bombay, Kharagpur, Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Dhanbad, Varanasi and Guwahati) administer the post-graduate level programs. They award the MS and M.Tech degrees in engineering. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted for MS and M.Tech admissions.
Other than offering MS, B.Tech and M.Tech programs, IITs also award M.Sc degrees in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry; Ph.D.; MBA; etc. In order to get admission to these courses, students have to clear the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED), Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) and Common Admission Test (CAT).
