Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai is an advanced research institute was established in January 1987 and managed by the Reserve Bank of India for carrying out research on development issues from multi-disciplinary points of views.
It is one of the premier institute established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
IGIDR was registered as an autonomous society on November 14, 1986, and as a public trust in January 1987. On December 28, 1987, the campus was inaugurated by Late. Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India.
The Institute is self-affiliated with Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research. Since then it has been awarded the highest re-accreditation i.e. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (in 2nd Cycle) on 16th September 2011.
Subsequently, the Institute was recognized as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. At present the Institute has about 150 employees of which 30 are full-time faculty members, 25 are non-academic staff.
The aims of the Institute are to promote and conduct research on developmental issues from a broad interdisciplinary perspective (economic, technological, social, political and ecological).
It is autonomous co-educational institute which is awarding its own Masters and Doctoral degrees, providing a regular course which is located in an urban part of Mumbai played a pioneering role in the field of higher education. the campus is located in another city also has a different name of institutions.
The Institute offers the Ph.D. program, M. Phil programme, M.Sc. programme for the students.
The Institute is starting as a pure research institution, it rapidly developed into a full-fledged teaching cum research organization when it launched a Ph.D. program in the field of development studies in 1990.
The objective of the Ph.D. program is to produce researchers with diverse disciplinary backgrounds who can address issues of economics, energy and environment policies.
In 1995, the institute initiated the M. Phil program. The M.Sc. program commenced in 2003 to introduce students to the world of research at an earlier stage.
