Gurunanak College Dhanbad was established in 1970 by the Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee to mark the fifth Birth Centenary of the great Guru after whom this college is named.
The college is managed by a Governing Council nominated by the Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Dhanbad, and draws its inspiration from the teachings of the faith propounded by Guru Nanak Devji.
It is one of the premier institutions established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
Initially, the college got affiliated to the Ranchi University, Ranchi since 1970 the year it was started. But with the passage of time, Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag came into existence in 1992
Then the affiliation of the college got transferred to this new University in 1992. At present, the college has got permanent affiliation with Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag in the faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce and such vocational courses as Bachelor of Computer Applications and Bachelor of Journalism & Masscom.
The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) in 1973 under Act, 1956 and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade - (CGPA Score 2.16 on a 4 Point Scale in 1st Cycle) on 3rd March 2015.
It is recognized & approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bhubaneswar to offer B.Ed. course. and the college has got “Deficit Grant College Status” by the Government of Jharkhand.
The main aim and objective behind sponsoring this college were to impart value - based education to the young men and women of Dhanbad.
The college attaches great importance to moral teaching. The college does not merely offer to teach in such subject as would enable young students to earn their bread and butter, but it also Emphasizes grooming them into worthy (morally sound) citizens.
The college offers two years Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course for those who have completed their graduation with minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.
Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the Degree level.
But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled with a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.
