Govt. Shikshan Mahavidyalaya, Nagaon was established in February, 1968 with the keen initiative of some of the renewed educationist, politician, social worker as well as well wishers like Late Bhakat Ram Saikai, Liladhar Saikia, Phani Bora, Mahesh Ch. Dev Goswami, Bongshi Sarma,Surendra Nath Boruah, Md. Imam Rabbani, Md.Imdadul Hoque, Shuteswar Dev Goswami, Prema Goswami, Surendra Nath Baruah, Pit Ram Nath, Md. Shamsher Ali etc.

The first principal of this college was Mohesh Chandra Dev Goswami. Late Hareswar Goswami contributed and sacrificed mostly by honouring the principal post by leaving the Govt. Post of Lecturer of P.G.T. College, Jorhat.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognized by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

This college is a Govt. College. It is taken over by the Government in 1983 and all the existing post of Teaching and Non-Teaching are regularized by the Govt. according to Order No-EPH 38/83/4 1st April 1983. So, the Govt. has the liabilities regarding employees salary, College development as well as other grants.

Now the College is upgraded to CTE (College Of Teacher Education ) in 1996 According the order No. – F-45-2/93-TE-II Govt. of India Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi Dt.- 6th ,February,1996. under the scheme of (CSS) Centrally sponsored Scheme.

The institute offers one year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course for those who have completed there graduation with minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course. But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled with a relaxation 5% marks in eligibility for admission.

Students here admitted based on the merit basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination and / or in the entrance examination or any other selection process  as per the policy of the central government / University.

Various teaching and learning techniques are being used by the faculty to impart knowledge and skills to students at Govt.
