Govt. (Auto.) & (JR.) College, Rourkela (Dist. Sundargarh) was established on 16th August 1961 and it was one of the best campuses among the top ranking academic institutions in Western Orissa was formerly known as Government Science College, Rourkela and was taken over by the Government of Orissa.
The college was located in a small building at the sector area of the Steel Township and it was then named as Government Science College, Rourkela. Later it was then renamed as Govt. (Auto.) & (JR.) College, Rourkela. With its vertical academic growth, the college was conferred with Autonomous Status in 2002.
It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
It is affiliated with the Sambalpur University, Sambalpur and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 30th June 1992 under Act, 1956.
It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade (in 1st Cycle) on 2nd February 2006.
The aim of the college is to impart proper knowledge to the educated youth in the field of arts and also to enable the prospective teacher to understand the nature, purpose, and spirit of education.
It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course which is located in a tribal part of a Sundargarh played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
This college has conferred as the status as "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)" and the best college by their Sambalpur University, Sambalpur. Also numbers of an award in publication, offering scholarship also awarded by the different societies.
The college offers two years intermediate courses in Arts streams with various specializations under Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha.
The college also offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations under Sambalpur University, Sambalpur. It offers certificate courses.
Also, the college offers distance education mode programs for the students under Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.
