Government Saiha College, Saiha (Dist. Chhimtuipui) was established on 20th July 1978.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with the Mizoram University, Aizawl on 22nd June 1995 and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 23rd March 1996 under Act, 1956.
 
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "C" Grade (CGPA Score 2.09 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 10th December 2014.

Actually, the idea for an opening of art college was started since 1974. The first meeting was held in the month of June 1974 under the Chairmanship of Shri K.Paichho, the then Executive Member (Rev)., MADC, and decided to set up a College at Saiha. But due to financial problems and other difficulties, the decision for setting up of a College could not be materialized.

However, due to the pressure of public, the college was opened at the P.U.C. level with reference from 20th July 1978. Later the Government of Mizoram had accorded permission/Recognition for the opening of a College at Saiha on 2nd November 1979.

The college was formerly affiliated with the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and later received recognition from the Government of Mizoram on 22nd June 1995. It was upgraded to deficit grant-in-aid status and the College was taken over by the Government on 31st January 1992.

The University granted affiliation for P.U.C. level at Govt. Saiha College in 1980 and granting of affiliation was renewed in the year 1985. Later degree class with I.B.A. was opened in 1980 after taking the permission for the degree class was accorded by Government in 1981

The University also granted provisional affiliation for an opening of a Degree Class in Saiha College on 19th November 1982.

Again, Science Class was opened in the College in the year of 1988.

It is a co-educational government institute, providing a regular course which is located in an urban part of a northeast region of Aizawl played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college has awarded as the best college by the affiliating university and also a number of awards in publication, offering scholarship & also awarded by the different society.

The college also offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts and Science with various specializations also two years postgraduate courses in Arts with various specialization under Mizoram University, Mizoram. Also, it offers Diploma and Add-On Certificate courses.

The college also offers, develops and produces courses for delivery through open learning and distance education mode under Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.
