Government Maharaja College Chhatarpur was popularly known as Government Maharaja P. G. College (Autonomous) was established in 1865 but came into existence on 15th July 1949 and managed by Jan Bhagidari Samiti (JBS).

The college is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Madhya Pradesh and conferred as status Autonomous in 2013.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) 17th April 1973 on under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade (in 2nd Cycle) on 19th February 2016.

The aim of the college was ensured opportunities (inside and outside the classroom) for them, to grow in intellect, self-confidence, leadership ability and sense of self-goals.

It is a co-educational government Institute, provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Chhatarpur played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

In 1948  this college was upgraded as Degree College with recognition in Arts, Science, and Commerce faculties. Till then, Maharaja  Degree College was a constituent college of Agra University.

The many-sided achievements of the college are fully in keeping with the expectations of Colonel Thomson who had remarked in 1865: "This institution will make a mark in the academic field in times to come."

The college received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of education, sports and curricular activities under Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Bachelor of Arts, Commerce, and Science streams and offers two years of post-graduate in Arts, Science, and Commerce streams with various specializations under Dr.

Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar and various other examinations are held in the college premises.

Admissions here also done through Govt. of M.P. online portal by the Department of Higher Education M.P. and hence gives a transparent and fair method of admission.
