Government Dental College and Hospital, formerly known as Sir CEM Dental College, was established in 1938. It is managed by the J. J. Group of Hospitals & Govt. of India.

Government Dental College and Hospital is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The college has also received recognition and approval from the Dental Council of India (DCI), New Delhi.

Government Dental College and Hospital started off from the first floor of Grant Medical College, Sir J. J. Group Of Hospitals, Byculla in Mumbai. There were just 6 dental chair units back then.

For the past seven years, the Outlook Magazine has ranked the college as third from the top among all the government dental colleges in India.
Government Dental College and Hospital offers postgraduate (MDS) and undergraduate programmes (BDS) of five years and three years, respectively. The college also offers specializations in various courses. The college also offers distance education programmes under the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, with which it has a tie-up.

The selection process of the college is based on merit, as per state quota, according to the rules laid down by the university.
There is an online application process through which students can apply for admission to the courses of their interest. A form available online enables them to fill in their educational achievements and interests.
Before applying for admission to the college, students should check whether their total aggregate marks, i.e., the best of four or PCM or PCB, whichever is applicable falls within the percentage as specified by the college for admission.
To qualify for the admission, students have to take an entrance test which is conducted by the CBSE. This is as per the rules laid down by the university. Based on the all India basis score, students are admitted to the college. As per government regulations, 15% of the seats (5 seats) are reserved for the SC, 7½% (2 seats) for the ST and 27% (9 seats) are reserved for the OBC.
