Government College of Education, Jalandhar was originally established in 1882 at Lahore, was known as Central Training College. After partition, the college was shifted to Jalandhar in December 1947.
It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
The college is affiliated with Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) in March 1956 under Act, 1956.
It is also recognized and approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Jaipur & Govt. of Punjab to offer B.Ed. & M.Ed. courses.
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2nd Cycle.
The main aim of the college is determined to provide the quality education to the future teachers. With the correct mix of technology and human touch, the college empowers the aspiring teachers to propagate education through the rungs of the society so that they serve the nation while making a satisfying career for themselves.
It is a co-educational government Institute, provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Jalandhar played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
The college started Integrated B.Ed. course commenced from 1966 onwards. As a result of increasing demand M.Ed. was started in 1955.
The college also received the many achievements awards in the field of Teacher Training, academics, sports and education under Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
The college offers two years Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) courses for those who have completed their graduation with minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.
Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the Degree level.
But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled with a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.
The college offers two years Master of Education (M.Ed.) course for those who have completed their Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with the minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.
Students here are admitted who completed their graduation in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from the recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the graduation level. The college has also started evening classes for M.Ed. course students and a study center for distance education under Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.
Also, the college was upgraded as Institute for Advanced Studies in Education (IASE) under the centrally sponsored scheme in 1987.
