Government College of Education, Burdwan was established in 1954. Its affiliated to University of Calcutta.
Government College of Education, previously known as Government Post-Graduate Basic Training College, was founded in August 1954 under a special scheme of Government of India for establishment of training colleges for teachers at the post-graduate level. The College has great tradition of high achievements in the field of teacher education and ranks among the leading colleges of education in the country.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) had accredited Grade ‘A’ to this College. The National Council for Teacher Education has sanctioned 25 seats for M.Ed. (General), 300 seats for B.Ed. till 2014-15. At present it is running two unit of B.Ed. (50 seats each) and One unit of M.Ed. (50 seats) both 2 year courses. The college also run 6 months Pre Ph.D. course work for research students in Education.
The college has spacious campus containing well maintained lawns playgrounds and separate hostels for boys and girls. It provides excellent library service. The Government Model High School and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-D work as experimental schools for the college.

This training college has glorious part and rich heritage. It was started with higher intake capacity of 220 trainees. It continued to excel in the field of teacher education program with its present intake of sixty five. The College comes under the University of Burdwan.
This University was started in 1960 with Sukumar Sen as its first Vice-chancellor. It occupies an exalted place amongst the universities of West Bengal.
The jurisdiction of the university spreads across five districts of West Bengal - Burdwan, Hooghly (excluding Serampore Subdivision), Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia, nourishing more than 100 colleges.
