Government College Kottayam was established on 27th October 1972 and run by the State Government of Kerala.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 30th June 1996 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.05 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 15th September 2016.

The aim of the college is to uplift the younger generation from their social and educational backwardness who otherwise would have been forced to eke out a living by fishing and the traditional coir industry.

It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the semi-urban part of Kottayam played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

From its beginning with three undergraduate and pre-degree courses, the college has evolved into a major higher educational institution in Central Kerala with a research centre, five postgraduate programmes, and ten undergraduate programmes.

The beginning of the college was humble with three pre-degree batches and three-degree courses - B.A. Politics, B.A. Economics, and B.Sc. Mathematics - functioning in a building of the nearby Government Polytechnic.

In 1974, the college was shifted to its own 15.5-acre campus. The college was elevated to the status of a research centre in 2000 when Ph.D. programme was introduced in the Department of Economic

The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

The college offers three years undergraduate and two years of postgraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, and various other examinations are held in the college premises.
