Government College, Kodanchery (Dist. Kozhikode) was established on 22nd July 1980 with two Pre-Degree Courses in a private building hired by the college sponsoring committee.

It was formally inaugurated on 24th August 1980 by the then Education Minister, Sri. Baby John and run by the State Govt. of Kerala.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with University of Calicut, Malappuram and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 15th September 2004 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade (CGPA Score 2.41 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 9th December 2016.

The aim of the college is enriched with a motivational environment for knowledge assimilation, skill development, value creation and democratic living

It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the semi-urban part of Kozhikode played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The Pre-degree Science group was started in 1981. In 1991, the college was upgraded and the first Under Graduate programme, B.Sc. Zoology was initiated.

The functioning of the college was shifted to the newly constructed permanent building in 1994. The B.A. Degree Programme in Economics commenced in 1993-94, B.Com with Computer Application in 1998-99, B.Sc. Physics with Computer Science and PG course in Economics in 1999-2000.

The much-awaited Post Graduate Programme in Commerce (M.Com) was sanctioned after a long period of 12 years in 2012. Later the Department of Economics has upgraded into a research Centre under the University of Calicut, Malappuram.

The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the University of Calicut, Malappuram.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams and two years of postgraduate courses in Arts and Commerce streams with various specializations under the University of Calicut, Malappuram. It also offers a Ph.D. course.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the University of Calicut, Malappuram, and various other examinations are held in the college premises.
