Govt. College for Women, Rohtak or Government College for Women, Rohtak was established on 1st July 1959.

It is one of the oldest and premier institutes of Haryana established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

The college is affiliated to Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.02 on a 4 Point Scale in 1st Cycle) on 25th May 2016.

Initially, it was a Govt. co-educational institution which was later converted to a Govt. Women College, the first in Haryana. with a vision to make it a centre of excellence to fulfill the educational needs of the women of the area. Since then, it is providing value based knowledge and evolving young girls into cultured and responsible citizens.

The institution in its present form started functioning in 1974. At that time it was named Indira Chakraborty college after the name of the wife of the Governor of Haryana. Sh. B.N. Chakraborty. Subsequently, the original name Government College for women was restored to it though it is still popular as I.C. College.

At present there are 110 faculty members and about 5000 students, getting an education in different streams as Humanities Science and Commerce. The college offers professional courses also like P.G. Diploma in Nutritions & Dietetics, M.Sc. (Computer Science), B.Com. (Vocational), P.G.D.C.A., B.B.A., B.C.A., Hons in Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Physics and Psychology.

It has been awarded. “Best-College Award” by the Honourable Education Minister of Haryana in 1997-98. Keeping in view the modern trends, the college has introduced courses like B.Sc., Home Science, B.Sc., Computer, B.Com.and B.com Vocational.

It also gives great importance to personality development programmers like NCC, NSS, Sports, Industrial Training and “Earn While you learn.” The college has a well-equipped library, three computer laboratories, Play Ground and a gymnasium hall.

The college encourages its students to excel not only in studies but also in all extra-curricular activities- Cultural, Literary and sports activities are organized throughout the year.

Inter-class competitions are held by different societies and there are fifteen literary and cultural societies.

The students getting positions in them are encouraged to participate in inter-college competitions. A “Talent Search” Competition is also held every year to search the hidden talent of the new students.

A four-day cultural and literary meet of inter-college competitions is also held every year. Our students have been earning name and fame by winning many prizes and running trophies of the inter-college level. This winning spirit is maintained in zonal as well as Inter-zonal Youth Festivals also.

In academics also our students have been bringing laurels to the college. The results of the college are much higher in percentage than the university results, with our students getting university positions on merit list of all the streams. The students of Hon’s classes deserve a special mention as they have been attaining top positions in university exams years after year.

The college has recently been selected as a “CENTER OF EXCELLENCE” by Higher Education Commission, Panchkula. The students passing out from this course consider it a matter of pride that they have had the privilege of being a part of the premier women college of Haryana.

Perhaps that is the reason that inspires of there being eight other degree colleges in Rohtak (Three of them being women colleges) this college remains the first choice of the girls and their parents.
