Government College (Autonomous), Bhawanipatna (Dist. Kalahandi) was established on 18th July 1960, continued as a Private college was formerly known as Kalahandi Science College was continued till 30th November 1961 and later was taken over by the Government of Orissa on 1st December 1961.

Later it was then renamed as Goverment Science College, Bhawanipatna. With its vertical academic growth, the college was conferred with Autonomous Status in 2002.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

It is affiliated with the Sambalpur University, Sambalpur and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 1st April 2002 under Act, 1956.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B+" Grade (CGPA Score 2.89 on a 4 Point  Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 19th July 2017.

The aim of the college is to impart proper knowledge to the educated youth in the field of arts and also to enable the prospective teacher to understand the nature, purpose, and spirit of Education.

It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course which is located in an urban part of a Kalahandi played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

This college has conferred as the status as "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)" and the best college by their Sambalpur University, Sambalpur. Also numbers of an award in publication, offering scholarship also awarded by the different societies.

The college offers two years intermediate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations under Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha.

The college also offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations and two years post graduate courses in Arts stream with various specializations under Sambalpur University, Sambalpur.

it also offers diploma and certificate courses.

Also, the college offers distance education mode programs for the students under Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.
