Government Brennen College, Thalassery (Dist. Kannur) was established on 1st September 1862 by Edward Brennen a master attendant of Tellicherry Port.

Government Brennen College, Dharmadam, Thalassery is one of the premier institutions of higher eudcation in the state of Kerala. With a tradition of 130 years, the college is catering to the comprehensive advancement of the various sections of the society in the region. Developed out of the Free School established in 1862 by Edward Brennen, the institution was elevated to the status of Grade II College in 1890. It is now a First Grade College recognized as a Center of Excellence with the status of "Heritage College".

The College offers 18 UG, 12 PG and One M. Phil Course. There are eight research departments. The selection process to the courses in transparent. Due weightage is given to the marginalised, the differently-abled and the like categories who are provided with ample emotional and economic support so as to bring them to the main stream.

The teaching, learning and evaluation procedures are being revised and updated from time to time. Well-designed Tutorial System, transparent Internal Assessment, fruitful remedial coaching etc. are the highlights of the instituion. The meritorious academic community, led by resourceful faculty of national and international reputation testify the vibrant academic ambience of the college. The college regularly hosts national and international conferences / seminars / workshops. The research activities are further supplemented with the Research Journal - 'Brennen Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies'. The Central Library of the College with its vast collection of books is upgraded to a knowledge-hub with advanced facilities.

The institution is always keen to promote community-academic interaction. The NCC / NSS units together with various departments and clubs undetake extension programmes that commit the academic community to social service. With the support of the Alumni Association, the college has been running a successful military recruitment training programme that has secured placement to many in the armed forces.

The college has also excelled in sports. OUt athletes and players are regular winners in national and international competitions.

The Brennen Alumni is a prestigious asset to the college and they include the current chief minister of the state and the minister of state for external affairs and parliamentary affairs in the central cabinet.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with Kannur University, Kannur and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.04 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 8th January 2011.

The aim of the college is inculcating in students social consciousness and help them to take up social works also to offer proper counseling to those who suffer from emotional stress and other problems.

It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the rural part of Kannur played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

Mr. Edward Brennen who left an endowment of Rs 8,900/- for the opening of a free school "to give boys of all castes, creeds, and color a sound English education".

In 1980 the institution was upgraded and FA class started with affiliation to Madras University. In 1919 the college was taken over by the Government.

In 1947, the college was accorded the status of a First Grade Institution, commencing BA classes in Mathematics and Economics.The college was shifted to the new building at Dharmadam in 1958.

Government Brennen College was recognized as a Centre of Excellence by the Government of Kerala.

In December 2004, the government of Kerala bestowed the status of "University" on Brennen College.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the admission criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.

The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the Kannur University, Kannur.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, Science, and Management streams and two years of postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce streams with various specializations under the Kannur University, Kannur.

Students should have to choose one honor (core) subject with two or more as subsidiary (elective) subjects for the specific undergraduate streams.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the Kannur University, Kannur, and various other examinations are held in the college premises.
