Government Autonomous College, Phulbani (Dist. Kandhamal) was established in 1960 was formerly known as Government Science College, Phulbani and was taken over by the Government of Orissa.

It was then renamed as Government Autonomous College, Phulbani. With its vertical academic growth, the College was conferred with Autonomous Status in 2004.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

It is affiliated with the Berhampur University, Berhampur and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade (CGPA Score 2.31 on a 4 Point  Scale in 1st Cycle) on 16th September 2011.

The aim of the college is to impart proper knowledge to the educated youth in the field of arts and also to enable the prospective teacher to understand the nature, purpose, and spirit of Education.

The college was formerly affiliated with Utkal University, Bhubaneswar but later after the establishment of Berhampur University in 1967 in the South Zone of Odisha, the College was affiliated to this University under the nomenclature of Government College, Phulbani.

It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course which is located in a tribal part of a Kandhamal played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

This college has conferred as the status as "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)" and the best college by their Berhampur University, Berhampur. Also numbers of an award in publication, offering scholarship also awarded by the different societies.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations and two years post graduate courses in Arts and Science streams with various specializations under Berhampur University, Berhampur.
