Government Arts and Science College, Karwar was established on 16th June 1961, as Keshava Gajanana Sabnis College under private management and this college was taken over by the Collegiate Education Department, Government of Karnataka on 16th June 1977 and thereafter has been known as Government Arts and Science College Karwar.

It is one of the premier and oldest higher educational institutions in Uttara Kannada District, established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

The college is affiliated to Karnatak University, Dharwad and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) on 23rd November 1977 & 12(B) 23rd November 1977 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.03 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on 5th November 2016.

It offers a wide range of academic programmes suitable and affordable to all sections of society which includes four UG programmes in Arts (B.A.), Science (B.Sc.), Commerce (B.Com.) and Business Administration (BBA) and three PG programmes, M.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry, M.Sc. in Zoology and MA in Kannada.

Efforts are in progress to start a Community College sponsored by UGC and offer a one-year Diploma course in Phyto-Pharmaceutical Technology in collaboration with local industry as the skill training partner.

The college also hosts a Study Centre of Karnataka State Open University, Mysuru which caters to the higher educational needs of those who cannot obtain the conventional education.

The curricular and co-curricular programs of the institution are focused towards the fulfilment of its vision and mission of imparting quality higher education and fostering excellence with social equity, along with nurturing social, cultural and environmental sensitivities among the students. The institution has got the Autonomous status from UGC and from the year 2016-17.
