Gour Mahavidyalaya, Malda was established in 1985. The college is affiliated to the University of North Bengal and accredited by NAAC with B grade.

The college was started 5th September, 1985 in a small room in the campus and now has marched to its present position. Originally the Library was running with a small accommodation but within a short span of period it has been provided with adequate space and facilities.

MISSION & VISION

Keeping in mind the vision and mission of the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal and MHRD, Government of India, the college strives for an all-round development of the students and to prepare them as conscious and responsible citizen of the country. In consonance with the demands of globalised knowledge economy, the mission of the college is to develop human resource through theoretical knowledge and vocational expertise.

The college aims at creating thinkers as well as innovators who can make a mark through their original and partinent ideas.

Being the premier institution in a semi-urban area dominated by SC, ST, OBC and MInority students (52% of the total students), the college has a particular mission of mainstreaming such peripheral and marganlised sections of the society by empowering them through education, training and counselling. As part of its outreach programmes, awareness programmes, and fights against untouchability and other such social evils. Ambedkar Study Centre, founded Under the UGC scheme of Epoch Making social Thinkers of India, made significant contribution in this regard and we plan to carry on with such endeavours.

Forty percent of the total students of the college are girls who come from far flung villages. The vision of the college is to empower them through proper education and counselling so that they can fight the gender bias in society and as conscious citizen of the country contribute in the nation building. As part of the that college has already constructed a women's hostel and wants to open a centre of Women's Studies.

As students from both the town and the far flung rural areas come to this institution, our aim is to reduce the rural urban divide by providing relevant and quality education to all of them. The economically poor but potential students are offered financial help through Half-free, Full-free and Poor Fund to complete their desired degree and make them prepare for job. Students from marginalised section of the students, in terms of caste, class, religion and gender, are offered remedial coaching and coaching for entry into services to help them to compete in the job market. The college is going to set up a language lab to help the students from the marginalized sections of society to correct their pronunication and develop their communicative skills.
