About Goreswar College

Goreswar College, Baska was established on 29th August, 1974 by a team of selfless and untiring social workers and lovers of education of the greater Goreswar locality. It is the sole premier insitute of Higher Education in the North-Eastern part of Baska District.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognized by recognized by the University Grants Commission under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956. It it accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "C++" Grade.

Brief History:

Goreswar College is situated in Betna Mauza in the North Eastern part of Baska District under Rangia sub-Division. The Goreswar Area which is infact the catchments area of the college extends from Barnadi (river) in the east to Puthimari (river) in the west and from the foothills of Bhutan in the North to Muktapur in the south encompassing a geographical land area of 340.49 square kilometer with a population of 1.81 Lakh (as per 2001 census).

The area inherits a rich historical past known as it was the temporary Capital of the Kingdom of Arimatta, the Legendary king of Kamrupa(12th century) to whose memory the Arimatta Garh or Baidyar Garh still stands near Betna of Goreswar. Arimatta who was from Gaur (Bengal) was known popularly as Gaureswar a name from which the name of Goreswar is said to have been derived.

Betna Siksha and Krishi Unayan Sangha (Betna Education And Agriculture Development Organization) was a major pioneering force in the venture that provided funds to develop the required initial infrastructure for the college after it had functioned from temporary sites for sometime at the beginning.

Started as an Arts college with the P.U. (pre-university now Higher Secondary) course in 1974 with 116 students, it rose to the status of a Degree College in and from the session 1977-78 as per G.U.Order No.-Aff/cg/1/77 with its P.U.

(now H.S.) programme still continued.

The college was brought under Deficit system of Grants-in-Aid with effect from 01.09.1981 as per Govt. of Assam, Director of Public Instructions’ Order No.NC.G (A)RC-2/82/17 dated Kahilipara,the 22nd July,1982.

Again the college was provincidised w.e.f. 1st December, 2005 by the Govt. of Assam along with other Deficit system of Grants-in-Aid Degree Colleges. The college has obtained inclusion under 2(F) & 12(B) of the UGC Act. of 1956 vide UGC order no. F8-31/95(CPP-I) dated 8th April, 2003. At present the college has two streams-1) Arts and 2) Commerce. At present enrolment of the college is around 1,800.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts & Commerce stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts & Commerce stream under Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh and also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University for PG courses. Besides this, the college is running a Study Centre of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOPU), Guwahat.

  • To include skill oriented training programmes to the curriculum to make the students self sufficient, since most of the guardians are economically backward
  • To promote awareness regarding value education and environmental issues
  • To promote research through the research committee of the college
  • To organise student oriented seminar, workshop etc.

  • The college has an attractive campus situated in secured and serene atmosphere suitable for learning with Young, dynamic faculty and non-teaching staff
  • The college has well-equipped with all modern facilites like classrooms, library, laboratories, computer centre, internet & hostel etc.
  • The college has the provision of departmental libraries to meet the immediate classroom needs of the departments which are controlled by the heads of the departments. Students can avail the facilities of departmental libraries within the college hours only.
  • The college also has a book-bank section in the library.
  • The college has hostel facilities for both boys and girls. In view of the limited number of seats available, the hostel seats are alotted strictly on the basis of merit.
  • UGC Sponsored scholarship for SC, ST, OBC & Minority students are provide from the college
  • The college has established an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to assure the quality of the college
  • Seminars are organized at departmental levels from time to time to enrich the level of knowledge of the students in the relevant field
