Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande (GSG) College, Umerkhed (Dist. Yavatmal) was established on 20th June 1966 and managed by Yavatmal Zilha Akhil Kunbi Samaj Society.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

It is affiliated with the Sant Gadage Baba Amravati University, Amravati and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 20th January 1985 under Act, 1956.
 
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade (CGPA Score 2.58 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 28th March 2010.

Gopika Sitaram Gawande Mahavidyalaya, Umarkhed was formerly known as arts and Commerce college by Janata Shikshan Prasark Mandal. Later it was handed over to Yavatmal Zilha Akhil Kunbi Samaj Society in 1976.

The founder president Late Shree Narayanraoji Wankhede has established Yavatmal Zilha Akhil Kunbi Samaj Society to impart education to rural and educationally deprived people of Society.

In December 1987, renaming the college after the name of Dr. Atmaramji Gawande's mother into Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande college, Umerkhed in December 1988.

The aim of the college is inculcating gender equality in the rural area, social awareness, scientific temperament, cleanliness, awareness about environmental issues. The colleges are also emphasizing on vocational & technical education.

It is co-educational self-financed Institute, providing a regular course which is located in a rural part of Yavatmal played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

This college has awarded as the best college and the college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government.

At present, the college offers two years intermediate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, & MCVC streams with various optional specializations under Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Pune.

The college also offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, & Management streams with optional specializations and offers two years postgraduate courses in Arts & Science stream under the Sant Gadage Baba Amravati University, Amravati.

It also offers Add-On Certificate courses.
