Godavaris Mahavidyalaya, Banpur (Dist. Khordha) was established on 26th July 1963 and was founded to pay respect to Pandit Godavaris Mishra. Though the real beginning of the college was started functioning in its initial years as an Intermediate School established in 1930.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

It is affiliated with the Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) in 1986 under Act, 1956.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade (in 1st Cycle) on 2nd February 2006.

The aim of the college is to impart proper knowledge to the educated youth in the field of arts and also to enable the prospective teacher to understand the nature, purpose, and spirit of Education.

It is co-educational private Institute, providing a regular course which is located in a semi-urban part of a Khordha played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college first started functioning during 1963-64 as a Science College (Pre-University Science) and affiliation was granted to the same subjects as in P.U.Sc. in 1964.

Later In 1965, the 1st year degree course was introduced, Finally in 1967-68 further affiliation was granted at the II and III B.A. pass stage in all subjects. In 1971-72 affiliation was granted for starting B.Sc. degree classes.

In 1974-75 Honours Courses started in History and Psychology. In the year 1981-82, the Commerce faculty in Intermediate and Physics Honours in B. Sc started.

In 1983-84 the new pattern of education was introduced and accordingly, Higher Secondary (+2) classes were opened in Arts, Science, and Commerce.

As per the new pattern of education, three-year degree classes in Arts & Science were also introduced.

In 1991-92 the college got concurrence and affiliation for the opening of education in Higher Secondary Arts & Science.

This college has conferred as the status as "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)" and the best college by the Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. Also numbers of an award in publication, offering scholarship also awarded by the different societies.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the Admission Criteria prescribed by the Utkal University, Bhubaneswar.

The college offers two years intermediate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations under Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha.

The college also offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce streams with various specializations under Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. It also offers self-financed and Certificate courses for the students.
