Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), Pune, was commonly known as Gokhale Institute, was established on 6th June 1930 by R. R. Kale as a centre for research and higher learning in economics. Later, on 9th May 1993, the Insitute was converted into Deemed to be University under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
It is managed by Servants of India Society which was established in 1905 and Institute is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950.
It is one of the oldest research and training institutes in Economics in India. It is located on Agarkar Road/BMCC Road in the Deccan Gymkhana area of Pune, Maharashtra – the city often termed as the Oxford of the East.
The Institute was set up with an objective to conduct research on the economic and political problems of India and to train research workers in these disciplines. D. R. Gadgil was the first Director of the Institute.
The institute is affiliated with the Deemed University (self) - Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 12(B) on 30th April 2014 & section (3) on 9th May 1993 under Act, 1956.
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.07 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 17th March 2016.
In 1993, keeping in view its professional standing and scope for further development, the Government of India declared GIPE as Deemed to be a University. The scope was broadened two years later when the UGC declared GIPE as a Centre of Advanced Study in Economics.
It is co-educational self-finance private institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Pune played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
The primary objective of the Institute is to conduct research in the socio-economic dimensions of the Indian society, and impart training to researchers in this domain.
The thrust areas of research at the Institute are Agricultural Economics, Rural Development & Cooperation, Population Studies, Input-Output Studies for Planning & Development, Monetary Economics & Finance, Public Economics, International Economics, among others.
Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics is renowned for its initiatives in qualitative research in diverse areas of economic theory and practice.
The Institute is credited with pioneering contributions by way of surveys, research, informed the debate, analysis, and critique which have shaped public discourse on major socio-economic initiatives and in formulating economic plans at the regional level in the State of Maharashtra, as well at the national level.
The college offers postgraduate & doctorate courses in Science streams with optional specializations.
