Govt. Brennen College of Teacher Education, Thalassery (Dist. Kannur) was popularly known as Government College of Teacher Education, Thalassery was established in 1957 and run by State Govt. of Kerala.
It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.
The college is affiliated with Kannur University, Kannur and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.
It is also recognized and approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bengaluru & Govt. of Kerala to offer B.Ed. & M.Ed. courses.
The main aim of the college is determined to provide the quality education to the future teachers. With the correct mix of technology and human touch, the college empowers the aspiring teachers to propagate education through the rungs of the society so that they serve the nation while making a satisfying career for themselves.
It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Kannur played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
Government College of Teacher Education, the decision was taken by the Governor of Madras, as the basal mission was not able to manage the institution.
In the year 1957, the school was converted to Govt Training College. In 1994 the college was upgraded and renamed as Govt. College of Teacher Education (CTE).
Captain Edward Brennen started a free school in the year 1862, for boys irrespective of caste, creed, and color for providing a sound English education.
Till 1883, it was a district school under the management of government. In 1884, the school was transferred to Tellicherry municipality on the basis of the government policy.
In September 2008, the college is renamed as Govt Brennen College of Teacher Education (GBCTE). In November 2008, the college has been elevated to the status of a Research Centre in Education, the first of its kind at government sector in Kannur University, Kannur
Being a Research Centre in Education, the college is engaged in several research activities. Currently, we are publishing a Peer-reviewed biannual Research Journal in Education Research and Pedagogic Interventions for disseminating up to date knowledge in the field of Research and Education.
The college also received the many achievements awards in the field of Teacher Training at Kannur University, Kannur.
The college offers two years Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) course for those who have completed their graduation with minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.
Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from the recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the Degree level. But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled to a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.
The college offers two years Master of Education (M.Ed.) course for those who have completed their Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with the minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.
Students here are admitted who completed their graduation in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from the recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the graduation level.
