Gangadharpur Sikshan Mandir (GSM), Howrah was established in 2005. To elevate the education scenario in the region of Howrah, West Bengal.
Gangadharpur is a middle place of the District Howrah.It is connected with several parts of the district. The place was under the heels of poverty and ignorance for want of proper education. A signal of green light was seen in the locality as and when a Boys school was established in 1964. The name of the school is Gangadharpur Vidyamandir which has been converted into Higher Secondary School. In 1969 a Girl's school was also established in the same place namely Gangadharpur Balika Vidyamandir which is now also upgraded to a H.S School. The Girl's school is a turning point for spreading women education here.
It was recognized by the government of WB and the locality saw primary education for their children . In the year 1981 a Degree College was established in the same premises of educational complex which was unbelievable to the people of the locality. During the administration of Lord Canning, the Governor General of India. It is the only university in India which produced four Nobel laureates and has ranked consistently amongst the first five hundred universities in the world.
The college is affiliated to University of Calcutta and approved by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), in order to conduct course in the field of teacher education, to produce competent teachers for the society. It was the first modern university in the Indian subcontinent. It has been declared as a "Five Star University" and a "Centre with Potential for Excellence" by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The college works under the guidance of an Educational Trust. Gangadharpur Sikshan Mandir and is equipped with modern teaching aid to raise the standard of the students.
Well renowned and expert lecturers are associated with the college, to impart all the needful skill of being a good teacher, to the students. The college is affiliated to the Calcutta University. It is the oldest of the modern universities in India.
The Times Education Supplement of London ranked the University of Calcutta as the 39th best university in the world, in the Arts & Humanities category in 2005.
The main campus of the university is located at College Street in Kolkata while and several other campuses are spread over the metro and its suburbs.
