Galsi Mahavidyalaya, Galsi was established in 2007.
Galsi Mahavidyalaya started its journey on 15th june 2007 in a building provided by the Managing Committee of Galsi High School. The Honorable founders of Galsi Mahavidyalaya aimed at bringing the benefits of collegiate education to boys and girls belonging to economically disadvantageous rural families who could not move out and join other centers of learning. Dissemination of ideas, knowledge and education, providing facilities for extracurricular activities for physical, moral, social and cultural upliftment and various community oriented outreach programmes especially for the girls are also the stated goals and objectives of the Mahavidyalaya.
In fact, Galsi Mahavidyalaya was established through local people’s initiatives to impart instructions at undergraduate level, beginning with just 129 students. The college received affiliation from the University Of Burdwan, 2007 and came under the grant-in-aid grid of the higher Education Department, Govt. West Bengal.
Our college made a very humble beginning in the year 2007. From then on all the teachers, office staff, students and local people have relentlessly been trying to raise the standard of the institution. Presently the college has 11 permanent teachers (including Principal), seven non-teaching staff, sufficient number of Govt. approved part-time teachers and guest teachers who, within a very short time, have taken all the due responsibilities. We are thankful to them.
In 2007, the college started with general courses in five subjects in Arts stream, namely Bengali, English, History, Political Science and Sanskrit. In the session 2008-09, the University of Burdwan extended its affiliation to Honours in History & English. In the session 2009-10& 2013-14, the college achieved further extension of affiliation of Honours in subjects namely Bengali & Sanskrit & Philosophy respectively and received affiliation in Geography (General) course in the session 2014-2015.The college received affiliation in Political Science Honours course In the session 2015-2016.
The majority of our students come from families of peasant background. As co-educational institute the college has played an important role in paving the way for higher education for the girls from the agricultural hinterland of Galsi. In the new academic session, the college has taken up many projects to fulfill its mission of providing and upgrading its facilities, resources and scopes in order to make a productive blend of knowledge and skill based education in its curriculum as well as explore job-opportunities in the volatile Indian market.
To promote the higher education in this region. This is a Private Aided College. The aim of the college is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need in this era of information and teaching. The curriculum is designed by the Boards of Studies of Burdwan University.
The college offers under graduate course in Arts stream. The college is well equipped with all modern facilities.
The College comes under the University of Burdwan. This University was started in 1960 with Sukumar Sen as its first Vice-chancellor. It occupies an exalted place amongst the universities of West Bengal. It has been awarded with 4 star statuses by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to acknowledge the contribution of Burdwan University in the educational development of the state.
The jurisdiction of the university spreads across five districts of West Bengal - Burdwan, Hooghly (excluding Serampore Subdivision), Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia, nourishing more than 100 colleges. The University is facilitated with various type of modern infrastructure.
