The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) was set up by the Government of India in 1960. Institute was located in the premises of the erstwhile Prabhat Studios, which is believed to be the pioneer in the business of filmmaking. FTII is an academic institute under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India.
It was formerly known as the 'Film Institute of India'. The institute started the in-service training programs for Doordarshan (India's public broadcaster) in 1970. Institute became fully aided by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting after the functioning of Television Training wing in 1974. FTII became an autonomous society under the Ministry run by a Governing Council and its appointed Director.
FTII stands tall as the best film institutes in India. The alumni of institutes work across the world starting from Los Angeles to Paris and London to Mumbai. FTII's alumni also won popular film and television awards from the ‘National Film Awards’ to ‘Oscars’, to the ‘Dada Saheb Phalke award’ to the prestigious ‘Padma Awards’.
FTII has grown to offer eleven full-time courses in various disciplines from its original five courses. It offers short term courses in film and television that are available on-campus and off-campus at various centres across India.

Candidates can pursue the courses offered by FTII after qualifying in the Joint Entrance Test (JET) and subsequent rounds of Orientation/Interview. One who qualifies in JET will be called for the next phase of the selection process, i.e., interview. The eligibility criteria vary from one course to another.
Aspirants should note that the criteria for short listing may vary for different courses. Hence, it is advised to read FTII prospectus meticulously for further information.
